Vacation rental cleaning and turnover checklist
Last reviewed
Plan the handover before cleaning starts
Use this checklist for the actual property, not as a substitute for a cleaner's procedures or safety instructions. Record checkout, the next arrival and any reported issue. Confirm the guest has left before entering. Ventilate where appropriate and follow cleaning-product instructions; never mix products.
Kitchen
- Check the fridge for forgotten food and wipe shelves as needed.
- Clean counters, sink, appliance touchpoints and inside the microwave.
- Empty the dishwasher and check that dishes and cookware are clean and dry.
- Remove rubbish and recycling using the property's collection rules.
- Count the supplies you advertise and restock from a written inventory.
Bathrooms
- Clean the toilet, basin, shower and bath, including handles and taps.
- Check mirrors, drains, ventilation and visible leaks.
- Replace used towels and bath mats with clean, dry sets.
- Refill agreed toiletries and toilet paper. Report damage rather than concealing it.
Bedrooms and living spaces
- Replace used bed linen; check pillows, mattress protection and under beds.
- Dust surfaces, vacuum or mop as appropriate, and inspect furniture.
- Check remotes, lighting, window coverings and the guest Wi-Fi connection.
- Keep any found belongings separate and notify the owner or hosting contact.
Greater Victoria wet-weather checks
Inspect entry mats, coat storage and the route from parking to the door. Wet shoes can track debris indoors. At coastal or rural properties, check outdoor seating and entrance access before the next arrival; do not promise access to trails or beaches without checking conditions.
Final inspection and sign-off
Walk the route a new guest will take. Test access, confirm the next guest's code arrangement, reset heating to the agreed setting and check that instructions are current. Record missing items and maintenance concerns. Take condition photos where appropriate without photographing guest belongings or private documents unnecessarily.
If a lock, plumbing fixture or essential advertised amenity has failed, tell the hosting contact before marking the home ready. Allow time for repair or an honest guest update; a completed cleaning checklist alone does not mean the accommodation is ready.
Build a repeatable record
Keep a dated checklist with the cleaner's sign-off, restocking needs and unresolved issues. Adjust it after the first few stays to fit your home. Cleaning and turnover coordination can be discussed alongside guest communication. Ask about support for your property.
